The Federal Truckers Tax or the Highway Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 is a federal excise tax paid annually for all the taxable heavy motor vehicles that operate on the public highways of the United States. Heavy motor vehicles are mostly trucks that should have a total weight of 55,000 pounds or more and run over 5,000 miles (75,000 miles for logging vehicles) for them to be considered as taxable vehicles. So, the truckers should report the heavy vehicle use tax to the IRS using form 2290 every year during the beginning of the tax period.
Generally, a tax period begins on July 1, 2022 and lasts till June 30, 2023. IRS started processing the form 2290 tax reports for the new tax period from July 1, 2022. So, the taxpayers should file form 2290 at that time. They have time until August 31st to file or renew their form 2290 tax returns and get the schedule 1 copy proof of the 2290 tax payment. Even if your vehicle is operated less than 5,000 miles on the public highway (less than 7500 miles for logging vehicles), you should file form 2290 to the IRS and report the vehicle for tax suspension.
